What Is a Sacramento Military Move?

For a military move, there are three types: Personally Procured Moves (PPM), a Permanent Change of Station (PCS), and a combination of PPM and PCS. To help you prepare for your upcoming Sacramento military move, we’ll break down the differences between a PPM and a PCS.

PCS Move

When it comes to a PCS move, a service member ends up relocating to a brand new base at least 50 miles away from their current base – this relocation is from government orders. The government will pay your moving expenses since you received orders to move. While the government is paying for your moving expenses, there is a cut-off for the total weight of your items, so if your belongings are above that weight, you’ll have to pay the extra expenses. The covered weight can change throughout the years, so before your moving day, check with your base a few days before you leave so you’re aware of the situation. During this relocation, you will work with dedicated PCS movers who are government contractors, and you will often wait for a more extended period for your household goods to get delivered.

PPM Move

When it comes to PPM moves, you will handle the details for the relocation yourself. While this might seem overwhelming, it allows you to choose the Sacramento moving company. As the best PPM movers, our team is happy to answer your questions along the way, and we can handle the details of your upcoming PPM move.

While the PCS and PPM moves are the most common, there is another option where you can combine the two.

Cost of a Military Move

Like any other relocation, the cost for Sacramento military moving services is unique, and there’s no one-size-fits-all price point. It’s not uncommon for an individual to pay for their relocation, but the government will reimburse you for your Sacramento military move. Here are the ten different reimbursement programs that the Department of Defense offers:

Move-In Housing Allowance (MIHA)

If you're relocating to a new country for your new base, MIHA will reimburse you for off-base housing-related expenses. The payment will cover items like a security system, utility installation, and any additional expenses related to moving into a new home.

Per Diem Allowance

When moving, you will receive a Per Diem Allowance covering meals and hotels while driving to your new station. You must travel at least 350 miles each day to receive this fund. If your final day is 51+ miles away but less than 350, the government will pay you for that day.

Temporary Lodging Allowance (TLA)

While you wait for permanent lodging, TLA will help offset the expenses for meals and temporary housing.

Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE)

Similar to a TLA, a TLE is for family members that are also relocating and includes partial reimbursement for temporary meals and housing.

Advance Basic Pay

As a service member, when you're moving to a new base, you can request an advance in basic pay (an "interest-free loan"), where you can request three months of salary. The next month, you will be required to start paying the money you borrowed.

Advance BAH

Within the different branches of the armed forces, you can expect individual policies for Advance BAH – it helps defray the costs associated with relocating to a residential home off the base. Before you utilize this benefit, you have to get it approved by your commanding officer.

Advance Overseas Housing Allowance (OHA)

For costs that are not covered by BAH, you can receive Advance OHA, which helps cover costs associated with renting a house off base.

While the cost of a Sacramento military move differs for each relocation, some factors can influence the final price. Examples include the time of year, how many crew members are necessary to complete the move, and the distance from your current base to your new station.
